MEXICO CITY, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Argentina midfielder Daniel Montenegro scored the goal on Sunday that put America into the Mexican Apertura championship quarter-finals after a 1-0 home win over Monterrey.
America, one of Mexico's most popular clubs who had not made it to the playoffs for two years, are among six teams who have secured their berths in the last eight with one match to go in the round-robin phase.
The top two teams in the three groups and the two highest in the overall standings go through to the quarter-finals.
"We completed the first objective which was to qualify, we did it winning which is also important," Montenegro, who headed home Pavel Pardo's cross from the left in the 16th minute, told Televisa.
Group One leaders Toluca, who qualified a week ago, crushed Pachuca 3-0 with two goals from Chilean Hector Mancilla.
Guadalajara, who sacked coach Raul Arias in midweek after three successive defeats, kept their hopes alive of taking second place in the group with a 4-1 win over Ricardo La Volpe's Atlas, whose chances have evaporated.
Morelia, who drew 0-0 with title holders Pumas UNAM, lead Group Two ahead of America and Monterrey, who although they are third have made sure of taking one of the places available from the overall standings.
Pumas, who made a very poor start to the season, are bottom of Group Three and out of the running.
Group Three leaders Cruz Azul booked their place with a 4-0 rout of Puebla, Argentine striker Emanuel Villa scoring twice to take his championship leading tally to 16, four more than second-placed Mancilla.
Santos Laguna also qualified from second place despite a 4-2 defeat by San Luis after third-placed Atlante, the CONCACAF champions, crashed to a 4-0 loss against Tigres UANL with two players sent off.
Argentine striker Alfredo Moreno scored a hat-trick for San Luis.

Utrinski Vesnik: Visas for Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro to be lifted as of December 19
The European Parliament has adopted a decision to allow citizens of Serbia, Montenegro and FYR Macedonia to travel visa-free to the bloc as of Dec.19, while calling for visa liberalization for the citizens of Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina by next year.
The Parliament also recommended starting similar visa dialogue with Kosovo.
On Nov. 30, the EU Council is expected to approve the decision, which will waive visa requirements in Serbia, Montenegro and FYROM for stays of less than 90 days in EU countries, excluding the UK and Ireland.
Visa liberalization is a step towards eventual EU membership.
The EU's executive arm had previously proposed a visa-free regime for those three Balkan countries, but Albania and Bosnia did not qualify.
"Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina must catch up on the reforms needed to qualify for a short-stay visa waiver," the Parliament said, calling on the EC to report on the two countries' progress early in 2010.

Montenegro ( /ˌmɒntɨˈneɪɡroʊ/ or /ˌmɒntɨˈniːɡroʊ/), (Montenegrin: Црна Гора/Crna Gora, listen (meaning "Black Mountain" in Montenegrin) is a country located in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the south-west and is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east and Albania to the south . Its capital and largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is designated as the Prijestonica (Пријестоница), meaning the former Royal Capital City..
The thousand-year history of the Montenegrin state begins in the 9th century with the emergence of Duklja, a vassal state of Byzantium. In those formative years, Duklja was ruled by the Vojislavljevic dynasty. In 1042, at the end of his 25-year rule, King Vojislav won a decisive battle near Bar against Byzantium, and Duklja became independent. Duklja's power and prosperity reached their zenith under King Vojislav's son, King Mihailo (1046-81), and his son King Bodin (1081-1101).. From the 11th century, it started to be referred to as Zeta. It ended with its incorporation into Raska, and beginning with the Crnojevic dynasty, Zeta was more often referred to as Crna Gora or by the Venetian term monte negro. A sovereign principality since the Late Middle Ages, Montenegro saw its independence from the Ottoman Empire formally recognized in 1878. From 1918, it was a part of various incarnations of Yugoslavia. On the basis of a referendum held on 21 May 2006, Montenegro declared independence on 3 June.
Montenegro is a member of the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe and CEFTA. Montenegro is also a potential candidate for membership of the European Union and NATO. Montenegro presented its official application to the European Union, with the hopes of gaining EU candidate status by 2009, and applied for a Membership Action Plan on November 5, 2008, with the hopes it would be accepted in 2009.. Additionally, Montenegro is a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean upon its establishment in 2008.
